Review: Crash by Nicole Williams

Title: Crash (Crash #1)
Author: Nicole Williams
Published: July 19th 2012

Purchase: Amazon | Barnes & Noble | The Book Depository

Southpointe High is the last place Lucy wanted to wind up her senior year of school. Right up until she stumbles into Jude Ryder, a guy whose name has become its own verb, and synonymous with trouble. He's got a rap sheet that runs longer than a senior thesis, has had his name sighed, shouted, and cursed by more women than Lucy dares to ask, and lives at the local boys home where disturbed seems to be the status quo for the residents. Lucy had a stable at best, quirky at worst, upbringing. She lives for wearing the satin down on her ballet shoes, has her sights set on Juilliard, and has been careful to keep trouble out of her life. Up until now.

Jude's everything she needs to stay away from if she wants to separate her past from her future. Staying away, she's about to find out, is the only thing she's incapable of.

For Lucy Larson and Jude Ryder, love's about to become the thing that tears them apart.

So here’s the thing I have read so many amazing New Adult books that sometimes I wonder when will they hit the downfall. I was hesitant to read Crash, because the hype is so big around this book, but I did it anyway. I am forever glad I did, because this novel was really good and I can’t thank hype enough! Luckily, in my case, I'm a big fan of Beautiful Disaster, so mini-Abby and mini-Travis didn't bother me. If you didn't like Travis and Abby, I am pretty convinced you won't enjoy Jude and Lucy either.

“The name’s Jude Ryder, since I know you’re all but salivating like a rabid dog to know, and I don’t do girlfriends, relationships, flowers or regular phone calls. If that works for you, I think we could work out something special.”

Crash is a trilogy of Jude and Lucy – the two adolescents with broken lives. Yes, at first sight it seems like Jude is the one who is destroyed, but when we dig deeper into the story and see the full picture laid out in front of us we realize, that Lucy is as much broken as Jude and together they might be able to survive the heartache they’ve had enough to last five lifetimes.

Lucy is a dancer and since I’ve been dancing since I was 4 years old, I’m so happy that this is something that excites, consoles and completes her. She is looking for a way to make the world better and this is one of the first things that Jude notices about her. Jude is probably the last person Lucy should be attracted to, but he understands her, makes her feel safe and is the very reason her heart races like a racing horse whenever she is around him. They’re so wrong for each other, but at the same time absolutely perfect.

I enjoyed the chemistry between Jude and Luce. I think Jude is like a laid back version of Travis Maddox. However, there were two things I didn’t like: 1. I thought the portrayal of Sawyer was a bit funny, but not in a good way. 2. I-found-all-these-writing-elements-annoying-because-they-were-everywhere. I know I, too, write like this sometimes, but enough is enough. Other than that, this novel was good!

“I’m cancer, Luce. And not the kind that you can kill off with radiation. The kind that kills you in the end.”

I enjoyed every single second of it and even came home early one night from my friend’s house just to read some more (ok, to my excuse, I wasn't a fan of the movie we were watching so of course a book won the battle going on in my head) and the first thing I did after waking up the next morning was finish this book. Loved the characters and how everything was tied together. Nothing was over- or underdone. This is a book I will re-read when it's rainy and cold or life feels like shit, pardon my language, because even though it handles different dark topics, in the end, it leaves you in a good place.

My teasers

All I know is…I’m drawn to her.  She’s everything that I’m not and it fascinates the hell out of me.  And it fascinates me that she hasn’t told me to leave her alone.  She seems as entranced by the situation as I am.

Review: From What I Remember by Valerie Thomas and Stacy Kramer

Title: From What I Remember
Author: Valerie Thomas, Stacy Kramer
Published: May 15th 2012
Add It: Goodreads
Purchase: Amazon | Barnes & Noble | The Book Depository
KYLIE: Mexico? What a nightmare! I should be putting the finishing touches on my valedictorian speech. Graduation is TODAY! Wait! Is this a wedding band on my finger
MAX: It started with Kylie's laptop and a truck full of stolen electronics and it ended in Ensenada. It was hot, the way she broke us out like some chick in an action movie. But now we're stranded here, with less than twenty-four hours before graduation.
WILL: Saving Kylie Flores from herself is kind of a full-time occupation. Luckily, I, Will Bixby, was born for the job. And when I found out she was stuck in Mexico with dreamy Max Langston, sure, I agreed to bring their passports across the border - but there's no reason to rush back home right away. This party is just getting started.
LILY: This cannot be happening. It's like some cruel joke. Or a bad dream. I close my eyes and when I reopen them, they're still there. Max and Kylie Flores, freak of the century. In bed together. If Kylie thinks I'm giving him up without a fight, she's dead wrong.

Honestly, I don't remember much of this book other than I didn't get the appeal. It was surprisingly long and really chaotic. I don't even know what happened! It seemed like a fun story, but it was so unbelievable and random that instead of entertaining me, it completely rubbed me the rong way. Oh, and it was from more than 4 POVs and how can I ever connect with a character like this? This book was just frustrating.

What exactly happened last night? I am ablaze with an unsettling mix of passion and panic. I’m sweating now, which can’t possibly be appealing. What have I done? I’ve got high school graduation, a summer internship at the San Diego Arts Council, New York University in the fall, and parents who are going to freak. I’ve been MIA for the past twenty-four hours. I’m in Mexico with Max. And we’re wearing rings that look suspiciously like wedding bands. This is bad. Very, very bad.

So, a bunch of kids are going to graduate and for their last assignment before graduation, a teacher gives them a paper to write about a partner. These partners are completely random and chosen by the teacher so of course the nerd girl gets partnered with the most popular guy in school, her barbie girlfriend is all jealous and so it begins. Can it be any more clichée? Umm.. Yes.

Then the nerd girl Kylie agrees to do Max's paper as well, because she doesn't want her grades to suffer. They go have coffee and what do you say? Her lap top gets stolen. Then they start following the thiefs and suddenly they find themselves in Mexico. What. In. The. World? Really? Are you effin kidding me? My eyes literally hurt from all the eyerolling and why I even bothered to finish this book, I have no idea.

It concentrated on building unlikely relationships and the moral was there, I can even see the entertainment factor, but it's so far out of reach that it became totally ridiculous and completely unbelievable. I could even forgive some of it if there were awesome characters, but they were old enough to not act like 12. Come on! This book is a disaster.

“‘Hey, girl,’” I call out. “‘If you’re from Africa, why are you white?’”
Kylie looks up at me. “‘Oh my God, Karen, you can’t just ask people why they’re white,’” she says.

I don't remember having such an experience with a contemporary book from the past year and that speaks volume for me. I'd not recommend it, but people on Goodreads love it so I guess you could give it a try. It may work for you just fine, but wasn't for me and I'm pretty sure I won't be reading anything else from these authors, sorry. The only reason this book gets more than one star is that they quoted Mean Girls. The quote above is pretty much considered a classic.

Book Haul #14

This week's theme is blue, I think. Every single one of them is blue, lol! I got two physical books I've been graving for so long and I cannot wait to devour them already! Also, I put Opal in my haul as well, because I haven't featured it here yet. I'm going to read it right before Origin, though, I don't handle cliff hangers all that well, lol. Anyway, if you've read any of them, let me know so I can move them up on my TBR list, because it's like forever long! I have so many unread physical books, not to mention all of my ebooks. So yep, let me know what you think and make sure to leave your links below in the comments so I can visit you back!

Elixir (Covenant #3.5) by Jennifer L. Armentrout (My Mom read and loved it.)
Tiger's Curse (The Tiger Saga #1) by Colleen Houck (This is the most beautiful book in my collection, hands down! Even prettier than Days of Blood and Starlight. The design on the cover, in the book - everthing is so stunning and gorgeous! Love it! I hope the book itself is be as good and beautiful..)
Opal (Lux #3) by Jennifer L. Armentour (I've had it since it came out, but I haven't featured it here yet and fyi, I'm going to read it right before Origin.)

Also, after I was done taking photographs for my haul, I started studying for my presentation in Food Science for Uni and my cat (he's so small that he's a lot of the times mistaken for a kitten), as always, wanted me to play with him rather than study so he came and demanded most of my attention to himself. Since I had the camera still in my hands, I made a few pictures of him and I wanted to share his awesomeness with you. He is such a cutiepie! Whenever he sleeps in my bed, he snuggles up to my body and puts his head on one of my pillows. Ok, lol! I'm going to stop here, otherwise I won't stop at all. Without further ado, here's the picture;)

Review: Nightshade by Andrea Cremer

Title: Nightshade (Nightshade #1)
Author: Andrea Cremer
Published: October 19th 2010
Add It: Goodreads
Purchase: Amazon | Barnes & Noble | The Book Depository

Calla Tor has always known her destiny: After graduating from the Mountain School, she'll be the mate of sexy alpha wolf Ren Laroche and fight with him, side by side, ruling their pack and guarding sacred sites for the Keepers. But when she violates her masters' laws by saving a beautiful human boy out for a hike, Calla begins to question her fate, her existence, and the very essence of the world she has known. By following her heart, she might lose everything- including her own life. Is forbidden love worth the ultimate sacrifice?
I have never been a fan of wolves, but I absolutely adored Maggie Stiefvater’s The Wolves of Mercy Falls trilogy and when I stumbled upon this series on Goodreads, I was interested. Then I found it on sale on The Book Depository and for 3-4€ I couldn’t pass up the opportunity and purchased the first two books immediately. I’m so beyond glad I did, because Nightshade was surprisingly great and original!

“The relationship of a girl and her favorite novel can be complex indeed.”

The society of the Guardians (wolves) and the Keepers (witches) and the complexity of it all are thrilling and different. Calla is an alpha of a young Nightshade pack of 5 wolves, including her, and even though she goes to high school, she’s about to be united with another young alpha from Bane's pack – Ren. She is scared a little, but she knows that this is the right thing to do and it is the only way to provide the safety of everyone. Until she disobeys her masters and saves a human boy by revealing her true nature to him. From there, the secrets Calla must keep just keep on coming.

The plot moved on really quickly and yeah, I guessed a few things beforehand, but it didn’t bother me. I found the world building and the layered characters way more important. It was a nice change to see a girl being the predator and telling the story rather than having her be an easy pray to her love interest. Being in Calla’s head was entertaining. Some of her decisions made me roll my eyes, though, but I guess none of us are perfect. I enjoyed learning about the packs' history and about the relationship of the Guardians and the Keepers, discovering it with Calla was more than a thrilling experience.

Then we have the infamous love triangle. There are so many books with love triangles, but Andrea Cremer did a fantastic job in showing us the pros and cons of both of the lads and I get why Calla was so torn between Ren and Shay. However, Shay was a bit dull for my taste and he was so annoyingly good and perfect that even though I’m certain that I know the final outcome, I’m still kind of team Ren. He is such a strong individual and perfect to lead a pack of young reckless wolves, but he is vulnerable and tender when it comes to Calla. I think Wolfsbane will change my mind, but for now it’s definitely team Ren for me. Go underdogs! Wohoo!!

“Ren watched us as he leaned casually against the table, holding a pair of scissors. I'd never seen a classroom tool look so dangerous.”

I really enjoyed this book and I will definitely read the prequel series as well. It was completely different from what I expected, but since I didn't expect to like it as much, I was pleasantly surprised. This book was enough for me to get interested in this world and these characters, who practically made the story, and I don’t regret the time I spent reading about this fascinating, action packed, captivating and twisted world Ms. Cremer has created. I can’t wait to read Wolfsbane. Recommend to all smexy paranormal YA lovers!

Excerpt and Giveaway: The Boys of Summer by C.J. Duggan

Today I'm excited to share an excerpt and a giveaway with you from a book that's been on my radar since the first time I saw it on GR. Now a lucky one of you gets to have a copy to oneself:) Hope you enjoy the excerpt and be sure to try your luck in the giveaway below. If you're a fan of hot boys and New Adult genre, this is not to be missed!

Title: The Boys of Summer
Author: C.J. Duggan
Release date: December 17th 2012
Genre: Romance
Age Group: New Adult

It seemed only natural to nickname them the ‘Onslow Boys’. Every time they swaggered in the front door of the Onslow Hotel after a hard week’s work, their laughter was loud and genuine as they settled onto their bar stools. I peeked through the restaurant partition, a flimsy divider between my world and theirs. I couldn’t help but smile whenever I saw them, saw him ... Toby Morrison.

Quiet seventeen-year-old Tess doesn’t relish the thought of a summertime job. She wants nothing more than to forget the past haunts of high school and have fun with her best friends before the dreaded Year Twelve begins.
To Tess, summer is when everything happens: riding bikes down to the lake, watching the fireworks at the Onslow Show and water bomb fights at the sweltering Sunday markets.

How did she let her friends talk her into working?

After first-shift disasters, rude, wealthy tourists and a taunting ex-boyfriend, Tess is convinced nothing good can come of working her summer away. However, Tess finds unlikely allies in a group of locals dubbed ‘The Onslow Boys’, who are old enough to drive cars, drink beer and not worry about curfews. Tess’s summer of working expands her world with a series of first times with new friends, forbidden love and heartbreaking chaos.

All with the one boy she has never been able to forget.

It will be a summer she will always remember.

Warning: sexual references and occasional course language.

Inspiration for BOYS OF SUMMER by C. J. Dugan

It was something that has been churning in my mind since I was a little girl, even if it was something no more mapped out than a group of friends hanging lakeside over a summer. It was an idea that has manifested into an entire world and I felt that I owed it to that eleven-year-old little me to develop it into a story. I know I was eleven because I had found an old exercise book with the story plotted out in my child-like handwriting and I could seldom believe it was something that had been swimming around in my subconscious for so long. It fell perfectly in line with me doing NaNo that year (National Novel Writing Month) and that was that, in one month I smashed out the bones of ‘The Boys of Summer’ (TBoS). In writing TBoS I really wanted to capture the essence of growing up in Australia. I set it in a small fictional lake side town in the 90’s to give it a certain flavor and provide a rich setting for a coming of age story, it is an absolute labor of love.

Excerpt

Moon rays filtered through the windshield, giving the cabin an otherworldly glow.

Toby’s perfect teeth were illuminated when he smiled. “You know, you are the worst winner!” He shook his head. “Ever since you won the bet, you’ve been apologising. Just go with it, enjoy it, because I assure you, next time …” - he leaned closer - “… you will not be the winner.” He pulled back, smug.

I curved a brow. “Next time?”

He nodded. “I fully intend to redeem myself.”
“Want a chance to rebuild your shattered ego, do you? I bet you’re itching to fix my bike so you can be rid of me once and for all.” I shouldered him gently, teasing him as I would Adam. And then I realised what I had done; I had treated him like my friends. He looked down at his shoulder, then up at me. His eyes shadowed with untold meanings that I couldn’t read.
“What if I didn’t want to fix your bike?” he said in all seriousness.
“Why, is my company so stimulating that you can’t bear the thought of being without me?” I teased nervously.
I was aiming for light and airy, but something must have gone wrong with my delivery because Toby’s face went blank. He looked out into the lights of Onslow, ran his tongue over his bottom lip and sighed.

Review: Rule by Jay Crownover

Title: Rule (Rule #1)
Author: Jay Crownover
Published: December 30th 2012
Add It: Goodreads
Purchase: Amazon
I had loved Rule Archer since the first moment I ever laid eyes on him. He was everything I shouldn't want and the only person I went out of my way to not try and please. He only saw me as a brat, and an entitled, stuck up princess but worse than that all he saw when he looked at me was his deceased twin's girl. It broke my heart. We tolerated each other, barely and had forged an uneasy alliance until one night I had too much to drink and changed the way we were forever. Suddenly life long secrets were no longer hidden and the one thing I always wanted for myself seemed obtainable as long as I was willing to go through hell to hold onto it.

Shaw Landon was a class act and I had no idea what to do with her. She was tied to my family, tied to the person that was my other half so I tolerated her and her haughty attitude when I didn't have any other choice. Some people thought I hid behind all my tattoos and piercings, that I tried to distance myself from my dead twin, Shaw saw through it all and wasn't scared of what was underneath. We weren't supposed to be together, weren't supposed to be anything but uncomfortable acquaintances but that all changed in the blink of an eye. Now I had to figure out just how a girl like her and a guy like me were supposed to be in love without destroying each other. Add in her custom made ex and two disapproving sets of parents and the whole situation sounded like it was more trouble then it was worth.

Oh my, this cover? Yuck. Sorry. This story needs a better cover for sure. And those grammar and spelling mistakes? Let's just say that I'm not a native English speaker and yes, I do have mistakes in my writing and speach, but I think this book deserves better. Luckily, Jay has hired someone to do it from now on and a new edited version is up on Amazon so if you guys read any reviews and get all that whining about spelling/grammar, then know that it's been taken care of. Okay, so the story, right? Told between alternating point of views, Rule was surprisingly good!

“That’s the thing Shaw; I never thought I did until you.  I never thought I needed anyone or anything until you got into my head and started breaking down all the walls I had built around all my feelings.”
We stared at each other in a tense silence.  Until she sighed softly and uttered, “I’m not sorry.  It’s not a bad thing to feel, it’s not awful to care about other people.”

Shaw is a good girl from a very prestigious family. She was close with the Archers when she grew up and Remy was her best friend. All the outsiders thought they were dating. Were they? No. No, because all Shaw has ever had eyes for was Remy's twin Rule. The tattoed, rough around the edges guy who went through girls like they were a new pair of underwear to wear for each day. Haha, that sounded weird, but it's true! He's like a man-whore with no feelings. Or so he thought..

Shaw is living in a mental box surrounded by the expectations of her parents, but all she wants is out. When Shaw and Rule start to bond, Rule gives that out to her in more than one way and Shaw is starting to become her own person. It's wonderful to see, but all the while her ex keeps torturing her. If you've read Easy by Tammara Webber, you know how difficult an ex is to deal with and Gabe was similar to Kennedy in his attitude and backround. He is that type of a character you love to hate!

“I’ve never trusted anyone all the time. It’s the people I care about the most that always seem to do the most damage.”

All those spelling/grammar mistakes in my copy aside, the story was very enjoyable and I thought this guy with tats and a thing for metal music and women was so broken and torned inside that he made me see how easy it was for Shaw to fall in love with him in the first place. Someone among my GR friends recently posted this on their wall: "All girls want a bad boy to be good for them.. All boys want a good girl to be bad for them." I think this thought is perfect to describe this book and I can't wait to see what's to come for Jet, Nash, Rome and Rowdy in the upcoming companion novels.

Mini-Review: Neverfall by Brodi Ashton

Title: Neverfall (Everneath #1.5)
Author: Brodi Ashton
Published: December 26th 2012
Add It: Goodreads
Purchase: Amazon | Barnes & Noble

Jack is trapped for eternity in the Tunnels while Nikki has managed to evade Cole's grasp . . . for now. But Cole is more desperate than ever to find answers about Nikki, his best chance for taking over the throne of the underworld. How did she survive the Feed? Can Cole find another Forfeit like her who can survive it too?

Cole's quest leads him to the other side of the world, to a mysterious, dangerous society known as the Delphinians, whose price for information might be higher than Cole can pay—a price that could destroy Nikki. But when Cole attempts to steal the answers instead, his mission ends in disaster. Faced with centuries in a Delphinian dungeon, Cole is confronted with questions he's been too scared to ask himself: Is he really obsessed with the throne—or is he obsessed with Nikki? And can she really give him a new beginning as the Everneath's king . . . or will she instead bring about his tragic end?

Since it's such a short read this review will be short too. I'm most definitely team Jack although when I first heard about this series I was sure I would be on team Cole, because at least in books I tend to like the bad boys better and Cole is the definition of a bad boy. Jack quickly gathered me on his side though, but it doesn't mean I'm not intrigued by Cole, who, in my opinion, is the most fascinating character in Everneath series. He is layered, dark and twisted, but there's something really different about him and by that I don't mean his abilities and immortality.

“Which one's the brunette?” I asked.
She eyed me suspiciously. “Nikki.”
Nikki. Nikki Beckett. I saw the letters of her name in my head. I could’ve written a song about how vines emerged from the Ks in her name, branching out as if from a tree and wrapping around the inside of my brain.
...
“They’re actually coming over,” Meredith said, averting her eyes. “Max, you be the one to say something. Divert them.”
“It’s fine,” I interrupted. “Let them come.”
Again, Meredith looked at me as if I’d grown a third eyebrow, but she didn’t argue.

Alternating between past and present, Neverfall is Cole's story and we get to see another, hidden side of him. We already know he cares about Nikki on some level, but this novella gives us an insight to the story which seems to become even more complex. We meet creatures that are frightening and disturbing to read about and get to know Cole as a friend as well as a warrior of the Everlivings. This novella was the perfect set up for Everbound and I'm really excited to see what happes now that Cole has this information to work with. He is not giving up on Nikki and he will do whatever it costs to bend the scale to his advantage.
